What is a BBS?
You'll find all kinds of explinations over the web on this, but basically it's a way computers can communicate. BBS stands for Bulletin Board System. Back before the internet took a foothold it was the best means to write messages, exchange files, and play BBS door games.

Why do I run a BBS?
Because there's still nothing quite like it. I suppose alot of the usefulness of BBSing is gone now, but there is definitely a resurgence of BBS use. I'm not quite sure why I'm running it though :). Probably mostly for the door games, and a little bit of the message bases.

Why would I call a BBS?
Well, there's some cool things about calling a bbs. First, all the same people call. So you won't be playing against and talking to totally random people on Yahoo!, you'll be dealing with the same set of random people. Second, there are some unique multiplayer games that you won't find anywhere else or anyhow else.

How much does it cost?
It's totally 100% free. It does cost me money to pay for some of the door authors who charge, for the machine, hosting, etc. But that goes with the hobby.

How do I log in and stuff?
This is the main reason I wanted to make this page. I don't want to give a whole history of BBSing or boring details, there are pleanty of pages that do that. You got here for some reason and you would like to check it out first hand. I run a telnet only board which for most people should be fine. Before the internet, most people used modems to dial up to Bulletin Board Systems, but now we mostly just use telnet. Most of you are on Windows Systems and should be able to just click here: telnet://niteeyes.etowns.net/ and you'll get something like this:

If you didn't get a login, then go to the links page and get a terminal program. If you are using linux or unix you should know how to telnet already :). If not you can e-mail me alextlm at bellsouth.net. Hyperterminal is fine for the beginner. If you have an older version of windows you may want to still download the latest version of hyperterminal.

Assuming this is your first time logging in, just type new and create a new account. Answer all the questions as best as you can. When it asks for the command shell and you aren't sure, just choose WildCat! which seems to be the most user friendly.

Okay, so I logged in....what now?
That's up to you. If you want to go right into the free multi-user / multi-player games, you have to get to the external programs menu. If you choose Wildcat!, this is D for Door games. For other menus it may be X for eXternal programs menu. For another it may be O for online games. Depending on the menu you selected that will bring you to the game menu. From there just make your choice and follow the directions :).

If you want to read messages, just got to the message menu and read new messages. The BBS will remember where you left of in reading them so you don't have to remember where you were. You might want got directly to a messages with higher numbers by typing in the message number to get you started.

Have fun and explore! You can't break anything...well...sometimes you can :), but just have fun looking around.

This is version 1.0 of this bbs doc. I welcome any questions or comments to make this easier. Looking this over, I don't think I did a good job of explaining this the easy way :). E-mail: alextlm @ bellsouth.net (take out the spaces, just trying to curb the spam!).
